Stacks and Smoke

There was never an end to the factories.

The more we stared, the more there seemed to appear.

It was as if there were factories producing factories

And any imaginable thing could be forged,

Weft, cleft, stamped, ground, riveted—

In the end, something always had to be made,

And something else had to be made to make it.
